A Skeleton Key to Finnegans Wake: Unlocking James Joyce's Masterwork (The Collected Works of Joseph Campbell), by Joseph Campbell Henry Morton Robinson

Countless would-be readers of Finnegans Wake — James Joyce’s 1939 masterwork, on which he labored for a third of his life — have given up after a few pages and “dismissed the book as a perverse triumph of the unintelligible.” In 1944, a young professor of mythology and literature named Joseph Campbell, working with novelist and poet Henry Morton Robinson, wrote the first guide to understanding the fascinating world of Finnegans Wake. Page by page, chapter by chapter, A Skeleton Key to Finnegans Wake outlines the basic action of Joyce’s book, simplifies and clarifies the complex web of images and allusions, and provides an understandable, continuous narrative from which the reader can venture out on his or her own. This edition includes a foreword and updates by Joyce scholar Dr. Edmund L. Epstein that add the context of sixty subsequent years of scholarship.

Do you aspire to the summit: James Joyce's "Finnegans Wake"? This book will guide you through. I suggest reading this book cover-to-cover first (it is not a small book, but it is a fairly quick read) and then jumping in to the spellbinding mysteries of "Finnegans Wake." Joseph Campbell (like Anthony Burgess) is an astute guide and his explanations of the double (and even multiple) entendre of Joyce's passages opens them up to be appreciated (and delighted in!) by any observant reader. What more can I say? Campbell's "A Skeleton Key" is my go-to when I have questions about "Finnegans Wake." Happy Reading!

I carry the key

Excellent Companion book to the most unreadable book ever written. I checked this out from the library and read one passage that stuck with me so thoroughly I had to buy it.Joseph Campbell is a master of unravelling Joyce's greatest riddle. The book is not a destination but truly an experience that taps deep below the subconscious. Campbell's experience with mythology makes it worth having him as a guide.

Perfect companion to the WAKE.

While Joseph Campbell's A Skeleton Key is likely the best introduction and all-around macro-level guide to the landmark literary work, Finnegans Wake, it also manages to transcend the genre of academic criticism and reading guides to emerge as a literary work in its own right. Campbell's A Skeleton Key is well researched, impeccably indexed, and uniquely informative on the Wake, but what propels it to be the magnum opus that it is, in my opinion, is its eminent readability. The Wake has inspired many reading guides and explanatory texts, from McHugh's vast, ambitious Annotations to Finnegans Wake to Tindall's less ubiquitous but still widely read A Reader's Guide to Finnegans Wake (Irish Studies), but in this reader's opinion, none serve so well as both a reader-friendly introduction and in-depth study of the Wake as Campbell's A Skeleton Key.Don't take my word for it, though. If Finnegans Wake has ever interested, enthralled, or intimidated you, go out to your local bookstore and look through a copy of Campbell's A Skeleton Key. Read the first few pages and you'll likely be hooked - and then log onto Amazon.com and buy your copy right away.

A must read for those trying to unlock the secrets of James Joyce's Finnegan's Wake.

Thank you!
